Sikspārņi ir vienīgie lidošanai pielāgojušies zīdītāju klases dzīvnieki. No pasaulē sastopamajām vairāk nekā 1200 sikspārņu sugām, Latvijā konstatētas 16 sugas. Tā kā sikspārņiem gadā dzimst tikai 1-2 mazuļi – ir svarīga katras atsevišķas kolonijas vai pat indivīda izdzīvošana. Sikspārņi ir arī konservatīvi dzīvnieki, kuri daudzās paaudzēs izmanto tās pašas mītnes un noteiktus ainavas elementus pārlidojumos uz barošanās vietām un migrāciju laikā. Šie dzīvnieki ļoti jūtīgi reaģē uz izmaiņām viņu dzīves vidē.

Brūnais garausainis ir cieši pielāgojies cilvēkam. Vairāki desmiti tūkstoši garausaino sikspārņu pārziemo piemāju pagrabos, pagrabu saimniekiem nereti to pat nezinot. Arī vasarā daļa garausaiņu par apmešanās un mazuļu audzēšanas vietām izmanto cilvēku celtās ēkas - gan bēniņus, gan spraugas ēkas sienā, paliekot nepamanīti, jo neveido lielas trokšņainas kolonijas. Uzskaites ziemošanas vietās liecina par lēnu, bet stabilu garausaino sikspārņu skaita lejupslīdi pēdējo 24 gadu laikā, kas liecina, ka cilvēku radītās pārmaiņas šobrīd notiek straujāk, nekā šis ar cilvēku cieši saistītais dzīvnieks spēj tām pielāgoties.

Bats are the only class of mammals which have adapted to fly. Of the 1200 bat species in the world, 16 can be found in Latvia. Since only 1 or 2 bats are born from each mother annually, the survival of every single colony and even each individual is important. Bats are conservative animals that use the same places for their homes generation after generation and that use specific landscape elements for their flights to feeding places and during migration. Bats are very sensitive to changes in their environment.

Plecotus auritus – the brown long-eared bat has adapted closely to humans. Several tens of thousands of these bats hibernate in small cellars. Often the owners of the land upon which these cellars are do not even know about their guests. In the summer a proportion of these bats choose to live and rear their young in buildings used by humans – they live in attics, in cracks in the walls where they remain unnoticed because they do not create loud, noisy colonies. Inventory at wintering sites show a slow but stable downward trend over the past 24 years which suggests that human-induced changes are currently taking place faster than this animal is able to adapt.
