Bombina Bombina - a quietly sounding opera in a quietly sounding opera house.

The reason why the fire-bellied toads (Bombina Bombina) had travelled so long from the South to the North was a mystery to most, but the tale of these travels and a love-story between the small tadpole of Italian ancestry Ululone and her Czech love, Kunka is woven into the songs on this CD. The story was first told to an audience of thousands of homo sapiens nestled on blankets on the night of 30 June 2012 in the rolling hills in Demene, Daugavpils region.

The human creatures assembled on this warm summer evening in the Eastern part of Latvia close to the borders of Belarus and Lithuania. Butoh dancers portrayed the emotions of the tadpoles Ululone and Kunka as they grew and overcame the challenges of the elements and the risky life of the threatened European fire-bellied toad. The characteristic croak of the true bombina bombina could be heard from the ponds nearby.
